Children of the world

Course Code: Half day training course or 1 hour workshop in schools with pupils: COTW/NA/hd

Content
‘Children of the world’ is being offered as a training course to teachers, educators, practitioners and teaching support staff and also as workshops with pupils in schools.

Option 1
Training with educators, teachers and teaching assistants and support staff.
The objective is that teachers will follow this course and methods in their own schools.

Option 2
Workshops with children

We offer this programme to a school and manage the workshops with groups of children from different countries and a group of British born children. The course may also be offered to pupils who are being bullied and who are also the bullies.

Aims
This is an interactive training workshop or workshop with children and aims to support an understanding of:

  • Differences and similarities
  • Speaking out and voicing our differences
  • Respect
  • Communication
  • Individual differences

The workshop with pupils and training of teachers, support staff, educators and practitioners promotes the use and capacity of facilitators and dialogue. It further promotes the use of interactive methods, collaboration, integration and inclusion.

Short Courses

A series of short courses are available for the duration of 2 hours per course. These courses may be combined to form a half day or full day course. Choose your short course or make up your own training day from the courses listed below.

Prior learning experiences of New Arrivals

Course Code: PLE/sc

This course is designed to explore the learning experiences of New Arrivals. These range from formal learning, informal learning, accidental and incidental learning, chanced learning, religious schools to learning from the environment, parents and during conflict and poverty. To establish the education systems, styles and approaches in different countries and how children learn in these countries. To develop an understanding of the impact of interrupted learning and different interrupted educational journeys.


Establishing prior learning

Course Code: EPL/sc

The method of establishing and exploring the prior learning experiences and identity of each New Arrival are key to the future education of learners. This course provides valuable information on assessment, profiling, portfolios and the tracking of prior learning.


Interrupted schooling

Course Code: ISB/sc

The consequences of interrupted learning, grey areas of interrupted learning, admissions, subject choices and barriers to learning. Characteristics of refugee children and New Arrivals. Progress and target setting.


Integration, inclusion and developing a welcoming approach

Course Code: IIWA/NA/sc

Creating an understanding of how learners integrate is an important issue for New Arrivals. How New Arrivals react to integration and inclusion in school influences their ability to learn. They need to develop a sense of belonging and the ability of different groups to achieve this varies depending on whether they are refugees, economic migrant or other New Arrivals. Ways of establishing the reasons for them settling down and their ability to adapt to new environments, their resilience and the problems they confront staying in the UK. They question why they are here and where they are they going next. Pupil mobility.


My New School Induction, Inclusion and Assessment resource packs

Course Code:MNS/sc

This is a 2 hour introduction to support and maximise the use of the flexible resource pack for New Arrivals. Linking the background and learning experiences of New Arrivals to the practical use of the packs. Provide an overview of good practice and how to free up the time of teachers and follow this valuable resource pack and programme.
