Infrastructure development of schools and education centres
Paramount trained in partnership with the local community and a
construction training centre builders and construction workers to build and maintain schools in the rural areas of South Africa.
The programme included the training of women to build access roads to the schools and gardeners to develop the school grounds.
Paramount designed the schools plans which consisted of phased units. The layout lended itself towards phased development and expansion, to ultimately provide classrooms for 900 pupils. This concept of phased development featured all classrooms had dimensions of 8.0m x 8.0m allowing for maximum flexibility in the utilization of space. A community hall, as part of the first phase of construction was provided for capacity building and adult education in literacy and numeracy, but were later converted to classrooms. A new hall were then constructed during the next phase of the plan. Provision for feeding schemes was made from the kitchen adjoining the community hall.
Community development and capacity building
This education centre provided the facility for capacity building and
various training programmes, such as the sewing groups who were trained in sewing skills and techniques to manufacture school uniforms, training of a storeman, sales representatives and packaging staff. This example of our community development programme created training and employment within the community, but all centralized around the school and the education centre.
Training of community members
Various training programmes were developed according to the needs of the communities. One significant programme included the training of early year's assistant and nursery school facilitators. This programme included the training of child minders together with entrepreneurial development, thus providing the opportunity to earn an income while other women may be involved in training and other employment opportunities.
